Beginner Guitar Lessons – How To Tune Your Guitar

I once had this student who came to me for some beginner guitar lessons. He said “I already know a couple of chords and one or two strumming patterns.” I said “Great, let’s hear it!” That first chord he played was the most crooked thing I’ve ever heard in my life! I said “Dude! When’s the last time you tuned your guitar?” He simply looked at me and said “What do you mean? The guy at the shop tuned it when I bought it nine months ago…” They say ignorance is bliss. NOT. THIS. TIME.

I then had to explain that the guitar is made out of wood which contracts and expands depending on temperature and that the guitar also get’s banged about from time to time. All this cause it to go out of tune, so we need to tune the guitar EVERY time we play. Why? Well when you’re trying to play guitar at first it’s hard enough to get your chords to ring out clearly so why add to that an out of tune guitar?

So we’ve established tuning is good right? Cool! In this video I will show you how to tune the guitar. The first 2 videos in the beginner guitar lessons series really set the stage for what’s to come. So make sure you know what all the parts are called and that you’re tuned up and ready to roll.
